Shield. The red pile descending from the top of the shield, signifies a ship’s bow seen from overhead, cutting through the ocean waves white and blue. The ship sails forward bearing the national colors of the United States of America. The golden square chain symbolizes unity, team work and fortitude. Each chain also represents the three divisions of the office – Environmental, Prevention, and Response Law. The sword belongs to Lady Justice (Justitia), a symbol of enforcement and protection.
Crest. Upon the colors of the U.S. Coast Guard is the book of law. Its golden color suggests honor and achievement. The silver globe resting in its pages refer to the international waters and worldwide mission of the organization. The three stars overhead denote the three divisions of the office, working together to defend the nation.
Supporters. The olive branch is a national symbol of peace and a gesture of goodwill towards man. Together, the branches cooperate and support the shield in all it represents.
Motto. The red scroll wraps around the olive branches and the shield. The Latin motto translates to “LAW ON THE SEA.”
Seal. The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular light blue disc, within a Cobalt Blue designation band, edged with a Gold rope, inscribed “OFFICE OF MARITIME & INTERNATIONAL LAW” at the top and “U.S. COAST GUARD” at the base in White, in between and on each side a small Gold disc.
